Ferd made my week

Ferd just sent me a prepress copy of the new Meddiebempsters CD, "Princes of Maine." It sounds fantastic. We're going to send it off to the CD pressers soon and should have it in time for the start of school.

Tracks (alphabetically, we haven't decided an ordering yet):

Meddie Josh Chung featured on Bowdoin Website

Bowdoin has a spotlight profile on recently-graduated Meddie Josh Chung.

I have to agree with his answer to this question:

What is your best Bowdoin memory?

My best Bowdoin memory would have to be the trip back home with the Meddies. I had seen other prestigious universities and colleges from the United States come perform their a cappella music in Korea. Since then I had always hoped that a group from Bowdoin could come and perform in Korea and familiarize the nation with Bowdoin a bit. Our two-week trip was a phenomenal experience and I cannot explain how grateful and proud I was as a Bowdoin student. We performed at the major churches and hospitals in Seoul and even at SBS, Korea's nationwide TV station. Through this tour we were able to start our first gathering of the Bowdoin community in Korea and establish the "Bowdoin Club of Korea." We were also hosted by the mayor of Ulsan City, the home to Korea's heavy auto industry and to Hyundai Corporation. The mayor was generous enough to organize a tour for us of the whole city, the Hyundai Corporation, several historical/ancient sites, and Buddhist temples. In one of the temples we sang our classic repertoire to female monks. The performance at the U.S. army base, going to see the Backstreet Boys' first concert in Seoul, singing at karaoke bars, and singing at the local restaurants and subway stations were also unforgettable events. Whenever and wherever we felt like singing, we would gather and give small performances and the crowds around us enjoyed them very much. The entire two week experience made us much closer as friends and gave us unforgettable memories which we will cherish always.

Back from Korea

Got back from Korea Saturday morning. I spent the night in Dallas after a runaway baggage cart damaged to the plane I was on from San Francisco and caused me to miss my connecting flight to Nashville by ten minutes. Arg! And on top of it, I'm now sick again.

Photos from the trip are slowly appearing in the galleryappearing in the gallery. More will come as I get photos from the other guys. Highlights and impressions to come.

Off to South Korea

I'm going to be out of touch from January 5th until January 20th while I'm in South Korea with the Meddies. Pictures and stories will come when I get back!

Picture gallery updated

I finally got around to throwing up a bunch of old Meddies pictures both from the invitational with the Colbyettes and Miscellania and from the reunion. I also added photos of my sister and I trying to make a gingerbread house.

Meddies Monday

Even Bowdoin picked up on this.

6:15 AM Monday morning: Meddies stagger over to Moulton to warm up. Well, most of them; we did have to rouse one guy out of bed. We headed down to Portland half an hour later and sang "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" on WHOM-FM Portland (94.9). Apparently WHOM is only playing Christmas songs from now until Christmas day. Yikes.

We've been on the radio several times this year, but we haven't been on TV. We were asked to sing a 10-second "coming up" clip, a short pop song, and a carol for the fade-out/credits, for a 7:00 news and happenings show on the local NBC affiliate entitled "207."

The 10-second-clip was odd; we decided to start in the middle of "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi at the chorus. It was all done live, so we got a "... and the Meddiebempsters will be singing for us live, coming up!" and had to jump in. Unfortunately, I hear they shifted the camera to us just before the host finished (and we started singing), making an awkward shot of us just standing there unaware. Funny anyway.

Afterwards, during a commercial, the hosts told us they hoped we never drank caffine because we had so much energy. We didn't tell them about the party where we somehow managed to go through ~48 Red Bulls with the Colbyettes and Miscellania. Yikes.

Our pop song directly followed that commercial break, so when the show returned the hosts were standing over on another part of the set with us. The camera was zoomed in on the hosts, but apparently Luke's head was right in between theirs - it was pretty awkward, some other Meddies saw it, and pretty soon we were all laughing in the background. Not quite professional, but not avoidable, either.

We sang "Drive My Car" by the Beatles for our short pop song. It was difficult to pull off because of the limited space we had - there was a rug, and if we stepped off of it, we wouldn't be on camera, and we do a lot of dancing and even some jumping in that song. I think it came off well, though, and Josh even managed to catch Tauwan in mid-air at the end of the show!

Josh answered some questions about the Korea tour, and then we sang the show out with "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." I was worried it was going to be too short to get through the credits and we'd have to loop through it twice, but everything worked out fine. We had a lot of fun there and have an invitation to come back with some video footage of our Korea tour - we'll definitely take them up on that.

Meddies concert Saturday the 19th at 6PM in Ladd House

We will have free food. Not chips and salsa, but real dinner - either Subway or pasta, whichever comes through. We'll be singing almost an hour of music between 6 and 8. Be there.

Meddies this week and last

Meddies had a good showing at the invitational this past Friday. We sang Beautiful Doll, All For You (Sister Hazel), Mr. Brightside (Killers), Agnes (our song about friendship, sharing, and STDs), and Never There. As I mentioned previously, Mr. Brightside and Never There were new. I sang the solo for Mr. Brightside and Jeff sang Never There.

I haven't done a solo since high school, not counting the once or twice I sung a verse of Danny Boy with the Meddies last year. I was more nervous up there on stage than I've been in a long time. I didn't think about it much because I've become very comfortable performing in a group, but wow - I managed not to screw up too obviously due to nervousness, but I certainly didn't do as well as I had hoped. People went out of their way to say that they liked it, though, so I'm happy. It'll be better next time when I'm not as scared!

This week we kicked off a cancer fundraiser Wednesday evening at 8 PM in Smith Union and sang on WBOR on Thursday. We've started Rebecca by the Pat McGee Band and will soon be starting Centerfold by the J. Geils Band. Jon arranged Rebecca and I arranged Centerfold. I think it's pretty cool that so many Meddies are bringing in arrangements - so far each of the four new songs we've learned or are learning have been arranged by a different current Meddie.
